Need a pick-me-up? Check into Club Med Bintan Island and partake in a myriad of fitness and wellness activities that will leave you glowing long after checkout.
Eat-sleep-and-lounge holidays are so yesterday. Trending now: Active vacations (activacations).
It’s no secret that more people are travelling for new fitness experiences. A recent Hotels.com survey found that 80 per cent of 18- to 35-year-olds consider keeping fit one of the most important parts of their holiday experiences.
Among Singaporeans, 21 per cent have gone on activacations, while 50 per cent are planning to do so.
Whether you belong to the 21 per cent or 50 per cent group, Club Med Bintan Island is a good place to start.
The newly refurbished resort boasts swankier swimming pools, restaurants, bars and sports facilities. What that means: more reason to leave your room and join the all-inclusive resort activities!
Here are the must-tries.
Whether or not you fear heights, let’s just say you will have no regrets doing this. Situated next to the pool, the 10m-high trapeze is an attraction all on its own. All day long, guests – including kids from as young as four – line up patiently for their turn to “fly” with guidance from professional acrobatic arts instructors, who perform on the trapeze at night. There’s a safety net, plus all participants have to wear a safety harness, so no worries about falling. Treasure the air-time, whether you’re attempting stunts such as hooking your knees over the bar or simply hanging from your arms. That feeling of swinging like a monkey – not to mention the bragging rights – is pretty darn awesome.

Yoga by the beach
Join the morning and evening yoga sessions held at the beach-facing palapa, which will make you feel like you’re at a retreat. Soak in the calming sound of waves as well as the cooling sea breeze while doing poses that build your strength, balance and flexibility. Mats are provided –just turn up in studio attire. These one-hour sessions will surely work up an appetite. After yoga, pop by the beach bar for fresh, slow-pressed juice, available from 9am to 11am.

Going on holiday doesn’t mean giving up your running routine. At Club Med Bintan Island, group runs are a hit. Every other day, the resort’s Gracious Organisers (known in Club Med as G.Os) lead guests on trail runs around the resort, taking you past scenic spots like the gorgeous Ria Bintan Golf Club. Bring your phone along to capture the #Instaworthy views! The distance and difficulty level are customisable. Beginners might want to start off with the easy 5km route, while seasoned runners can opt for trails ranging from 8km to 10km. Even if you’d rather walk, the G.Os are happy to accompany you all the way!

Your room gives you a serene view of the South China Sea, being on it while on the kayak is an entirely different experience. The gentle, clear blue waves will make you forget all worries, and return to the shore with a quieter mind. Your arms, back, shoulders and core will be sculpted by the end of your trip. Kayaks are available from 9am to 12pm and 2pm to 5pm daily.
You’ve seen and heard about archery, but have you tried it? Club Med Bintan Island is one of several Club Med destinations offering lessons by an instructor trained in this bow-and-arrow sport. The archery arena caters to both newcomers and veterans, with a trained instructor on the ground to provide shooting tips. You’ll be surprised by the amount of focus, strength and control needed to hit the target! Friendly tournaments are held every Tuesday, Thursday and weekend – a great chance to bond with family or friends.
The Club Med culture
“No thanks” is not an option here. What makes Club Med stand out from other resorts is its fun-loving culture.
From the moment you set foot in the resort, you will be hosted by a team of energetic staff. The Club Med Gracious Organisers (G.Os) comprise over 20 nationalities, including Thai, Korean, Japanese and Australian.
Think of them as orientation camp leaders. Outgoing and charismatic, they are your guides, companions, and entertainers throughout your stay.
During the day, they lead various fitness activities, from outdoor running to aquarobics to golf. At night, they transform into somersaulting acrobats, hip-hop dancers and party animals.
Yes, partay! A Club Med trip is not complete without attending one of the kick-ass themed night parties, helmed by the G.Os and resort’s general manager (known as the village chief). Thoee parties last till the wee hours of the morning, and will have you humming and grooving for days afterwards.
Located in North Lagoi, Indonesia, Club Med Bintan Island is 55 minutes by ferry from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal. For more information, visit www.clubmed.com.sg.
